aaargh!

Am I missing something?
Is there an idiot proof way to split embroidery thread or does this happen to everyone else as much as it does to me?

This happens a lot to me - I think I'm always trying to do things too quickly and it always ends in knots.

cut thread to desired length pull out one strand at a timewith right hand with left hold the bundel of strands. should work like a breeze just one strand at a time though. Any more than that and you get whats in your picture.

Yes, what Sunshine said - it's sometimes called 'stripping' the thread. Here's a link to explain it a little better. (Hello from a lurker, by the way!)

Yeah. I love me some stripping ;-)

So I just have to be patient?
...sounds familiar!

*laughs* Nup, I think this happens to everyone. So frustrating - drives me insane!

I do it differently (but maybe that's not unusual). I split the top and separate the 2 or 3 threads I want. In my 'less dominent' hand I firmly hold the 2 strands/4 strands, etc in different fingers. I use my dominent hand to pull/grip the length of thread and divide it with my pointer finger running down the length. I kind of unravel/untwist it as I go down.

I'm not making any sense at all. Maybe I should photograph it and do a tutorial. It never bunches up this way.

May be frustrating, but it makes for a pretty photo! ;)
